The tutor

Eddie Bohnert was born in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.

He came to England to study, and has lived in London all of his adult life. He is a council member of the Luxembourg Society, and helps organise the informal drinks evenings, which take place in Central London on the second Tuesday of each month. See http://www.luxembourgsociety.org.uk/ for details.

He has spent his career to date in the field of corporate communications, photography and education. In February, he held a photography exhibition at the Luxembourg Embassy in London. You can see some of the pictures at http://www.snapshots-of-a-city.co.uk/.

His life-long interest in linguistics and history led to his acceptance, in 2004, as a mature student at the Department of Germanic Studies of Sheffield University, to work on an MPhil/PhD thesis about the affinities between Lëtzebuergesch and English. Sadly, he had to abandon this project through lack of funding.

He is currently visiting lecturer in Lëtzebuergesch at Sheffield University, and recently very successfully taught Lëtzebuergesch to a young Russian student. When he mentioned this to fellow guests at the Ambassador’s National Day reception, a number of people expressed an interest in attending formal language classes. This is the result.

If you are unable to commit yourself to this course, Eddie is able to tailor personal tuition to your specific needs. You can contact him on 020 8748 8013.

“Having lived in Luxembourg for the best part of ten years, it was only when I began studying under Eddie's watchful eye that I really got a grasp on the language. Although it was not the easiest of tasks, within six months I had reached a standard high enough to sit the national language exam in order to apply for Luxembourg nationality.

The lessons were professional and informative. Eddie is an eloquent native speaker and addresses not only the facts of the language but also practical expressions, peculiarities and etymology. It has been a real pleasure and I am glad to say that I have been equipped with the tools to continue refining my knowledge of the language on my own, even after the completion of the course.”
